Whistler Blackcomb has officially surpassed the previous record of snow in the month of November with 418cm (165 inches) of snow falling as of Thursday, November 19. The previous record, set in 2006, was 416cm (164 inches). The snowfall record dates back to 1979.

Winter is ON at Whistler Blackcomb as die-hards flock to the slopes for early opening. Opening day in a ski resort generates more excitement than any other day of the year, and in Whistler Village this morning that was no exception. Keeners started lining up yesterday afternoon to get the first gondola up, and by 7:30am this morning, the lineup stretched throughout the Village. With 122 centimetres (48 inches) of snow falling in just over week, and an opening day that was bumped up by 12 days, the excitement was warranted.

The initial attack on the fire by Ministry of Forests and Range appears to have been successful; however, zero percent of the fire is currently contained. A 20 person crew has water on-site and is working to establish a guard on the west flank of the fire. Throughout the day there may be air support supplied to the ground crew should it be required. The Ruby Bowl terrain is very rocky, with minimal alpine vegetation and is isolated from the more commonly accessed portions of Blackcomb Mountain.

Whistler, BC – Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain operations continue today, offering sightseeing, hiking and mountain biking via seven chairlifts, including the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. Fire crews remain on site on Blackcomb today and remain vigilant given the high temperatures and potential for changing weather patterns.

Further details regarding the status of two Blackcomb fires will be distributed by the Resort Municipality of Whistler, in conjunction with the Ministry of Forests and Range following morning briefings.

Blackcomb Mountain operations include access for uploading and downloading via the Wizard Express and Solar Coaster chairs from the Blackcomb base, sightseeing around the Blackcomb PEAK 2 PEAK terminal and Rendezvous, as well as the Alpine Walk hiking trail located on the southwest side of the mountain. Rendezvous and Christine’s restaurants will also be operational. Access to the Overlord trail and all other Blackcomb trails are restricted. As well, the Crystal Ridge and Ruby Bowl fires are still active and entry into these areas is strictly prohibited.

Whistler Mountain is open, including the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, for sightseeing, hiking and mountain biking, with some restrictions to the high alpine hiking trails such as the High Note and Singing Pass trails. Access is via the Whistler Village Gondola or the Fitzsimmons Express.

Whistler, BC, August 3, 2009 – The Ministry of Forests and Range and the Whistler Fire Department can confirm that a new fire ignited at approximately 15:45 in the Blackcomb mountain area known as the Ruby Bowl. The exact cause is unknown; however, experts suggest that it is likely the cause of hold-over (commonly known as a sleeper) lightning from July 30.

The fire was initially burning at rank 3-4, but following an initial air attack shows signs of diminishing. The estimated size is five hectares. The terrain is very steep and can be described as rocky with minimal alpine vegetation. Two heavy helicopters are attacking the fire, one with water, another with water/foam.

Whistler, BC, August 2, 2009 – The Ministry of Forests and Range and the Whistler Fire Department have declared Blackcomb Mountain safe to re-open to guests for operations today. The Crystal Ridge fire, located on Blackcomb Mountain, is now 85% contained. It is in an isolated area on the north flank of the mountain that does not interfere with the summer operating area on Blackcomb. Ministry fire crews, with additional support provided by Whistler Blackcomb and the Resort Municipality of Whistler, have deployed significant resources to contain the fire, and feel that 100% containment will be achieved by the end of day Sunday.

With no critical infrastructure at risk on Blackcomb and no evacuation alerts issued for the area, all parties are confident in allowing limited operations to resume on Blackcomb Mountain. However, we remind everyone that this fire is still not fully contained nor controlled. This is still a very active fire.

Whistler, B.C. – Fire crews continue to work to fight the Blackcomb Mountain fire, which remains a rank 1-2 fire and is now 50 percent contained. The fire is still estimated at 30 hectares and crews estimate the fire will be 100 per cent contained within two to three days.

Crews remain vigilant given the high temperatures and potential for changing weather patterns. The fire was ignited by a lightning strike July 30 at 14:55 on the east side of Crystal Ridge (the north flank of Blackcomb Mountain).

The Ministry of Forests and Range has deployed significant resources to contain the fire including a 67-person crew that is on the ground today, with additional resources provided from the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) Fire Rescue Service and Whistler Blackcomb. All air support has been reprioritized; however resources remain available if conditions change.

The fire, ignited by a lightning strike yesterday at 14:55 on the east side of Crystal Ridge (the north flank of Blackcomb Mountain), has shown little growth thanks to teamwork and cooler temperatures over night. The Ministry has deployed significant resources to contain the Blackcomb Mountain blaze including a 41-person ground crew with additional resources available from the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) Fire Rescue Service and Whistler Blackcomb. Three heavy rotary engine tankers have been deployed to support the ground crew.

The fire is estimated at 30 hectares in size and is classified as a category 2 fire, downgrading yesterday’s classification of category 4. The fire is located in a timber area and is not an interface fire. No critical infrastructure in Whistler is under threat at this time. No evacuation alerts have been issued in the Whistler area. The RMOW has activated its Emergency Operations Centre. An update on the fire will be provided at 16:00 (PST) unless any major changes occur in advance of that time. In the early afternoon of July 30 prior to the fire breaking out, Whistler Blackcomb mountains closed early due to the threat of lightning, with all guests and staff being escorted off the mountains. Whistler, B.C. - A fire is currently burning on the east side of Crystal Ridge, which is the north flank of Blackcomb Mountain. There had been lightening activity in the area earlier in the day. At 14:55 lightning strike ignited the fire on Blackcomb Mountain. The Ministry of Forests and Range has deployed significant resources to contain the blaze, which is now estimated at 50-75 hectares in size is classified as a category four fire. Fixed wing and rotary engine tankers have been deployed, but will cease flights overnight.

The fire is located in a timber area and is not an interface fire. No critical infrastructure in Whistler or the Callaghan Valley are under threat at this time. No evacuation alerts have been issued in the Whistler area. The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has activated its Emergency Operations Centre. An update on the fire will be provided at 8:00 am (PST) unless any major changes occur in advance of that. Athlete registration for Kokanee Crankworx 2009 will open on Monday, June 8. Nine days of events beginning on August 8 running through to August 16 will attract hundreds of athletes from the world’s best mountain bikers to amateurs. Kokanee Crankworx 2008 saw 1,400 competitor “starts” by amateurs and professionals in all disciplines with many sold out so event officials encourage all to register early. The Dual Slalom, Monster Energy Garbanzo Downhill, WomenzWorx, the Air Downhill, the Giant Slalom presented by Giant Bicycles, the Canadian Open Enduro and the Canadian Open Downhill events are available for athlete registrations. For 2009, professional riders will be competing for over $80,000 cash and amateurs will be able to riding for over $50,000 in prizes, making this one of the biggest total prize purse events in the mountain bike world. Athletes cannot register for the VW Trick Showdown or the Monster Energy Slopestyle as these events are invitational formats with 24 of the top professional freeride athletes competing. Based on results from previous slopestyle competitions, 18 riders have been pre-qualified to the invitee list but six spots remain from upcoming events.

Whistler’s 6th Annual Freeride Mountain Bike Festival Returns August 8-16, 2009 Including Perennial Favourites and New Event. A hot new event this year is the Canadian Open Enduro taking place on Saturday, August 15. The Enduro combines the best elements of downhill and x-country to create a hybrid event that showcases true all-mountain riders. It will begin with a mass start, by categories, on the upper reaches of Whistler Mountain and will follow a course featuring some of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park’s best all-mountain trails. Early this morning, the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA), in conjunction with Whistler Blackcomb, will complete a secondary inspection of mountain lifts currently in operation. A preliminary inspection across Whistler and Blackcomb was undertaken throughout the night by a team of 20 lift maintenance staff. After determining the cause of yesterday’s tower failure on Blackcomb Mountain’s Excalibur Gondola, and reviewing all similar tower structures to confirm that no similar issues exist, the BCSA is expected to confirm Whistler Blackcomb’s findings that the integrity of other towers have not been compromised.

At approximately 2:30pm PST on Tuesday, December 16, a structural failure on tower 4 on Blackcomb Mountain’s Excalibur Gondola caused the gondola to cease operation. No gondola cabins came off the line. There were a few injuries that appear to be minor. Injured guests were treated at the Whistler Medical Clinic. The cause of the incident is unknown at this time and will be investigated, however the immediate priority has been to secure the tower and evacuate guests.

Bike Park Celebrates 10 year Anniversary with Mash Up Video Contest. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park celebrated 10 years of success this year, and to thank die-hard park riders, launched a one of a kind contest. The Mash UP video contest ran July 1 through September 20 and gave away two prizes; a Whistler Mountain Bike Park Pass good for 10 years, a Whistler Mountain Bike Park edition Kona Stab Garbanzo DH mountain bike. Vancouver Island’s Aaron LaRoque and Vancouver’s Eric So were the winners.

Whistler Blackcomb has received 40 centimetres of new snow in the alpine, and with opening day just three weeks away, the anticipation in this resort town is palpable. Although freezing levels are expected to rise over the next two days, the Environment Canada Alpine Forecast is calling for cooler temperatures and lower freezing levels by Sunday. The long range forecast shows a possibility up to 90 centimetres of snowfall throughout next week.

Whistler Blackcomb has fired up its fleet of snow guns in anticipation of the upcoming winter season. 40 automated guns, of 269 total snow guns, have turned on as the freezing level started to creep down the mountains. The official opening day for Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains is November 27, 2008. Mother Nature blesses Whistler Blackcomb with over 33 feet of snow annually; the snow guns supplement by generating snow on the lower portion of mountains in early-season to provide a ski-out as soon as possible.

In a recent letter to the editor in Pique Newsmagazine, Tavia “Tavalanche” Pursell shared why she thought that 89 year-old George Huxtable should be one of the first to ride the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. Whistler Blackcomb jumped at the suggestion, and has launched a competition to find out whom else the community believes should ride first on opening day.

Construction has begun on a renewable energy project that will offset the total annual energy consumption at Whistler Blackcomb. The Fitzsimmons Creek Hydro Project, located entirely within Whistler Blackcomb's operating area, will produce 33.5 gigawatt hours of hydro electricity per year – the equivalent of powering the ski resort's winter and summer operations including 38 lifts, 17 restaurants, 269 snowguns and countless other buildings and services.
