Whistler Mountain Bike Park Report

<heading>June 15, 2010</heading>

Hey Park Riders here is a short early-in-the-week update on what is going on behind the scenes in the Park. We just opened the lower section of the Canadian Open DH course this afternoon. It is a bit soft and needs some traffic to ride it in so get up there and do some laps. To find your way into the course follow the entrance to Double Vision and take a left at the QP instead of riding it to the right and onto the start gate. The course flows down the left side of the Boneyard and then crosses over to the right via an underpass under the "Catchers Mitt" feature. From the Mitt it lines up with the finale jump at the bottom for the glory shot into the court yard.

Also on tap for the week is to get some of the Boneyard features open for public consumption and the newly tuned Schlayer section cracked again. Now we just need to get some more warm temps to help with the snow melt...

Whistler Mountain Bike Park Report

<heading>June 10, 2010</heading>

Hey Park riders, the season seems to picking up more momentum each week and I can't believe we are already nearing mid June. The riding has been fantastic this week with light rain barely penetrating the forest canopy. The trails are in really good shape as a result and the lineups have been virtually non existent. One of the perks of my job is that I get to decide, on the spur of the moment, to do things like tag along on clinics. This past weekend I decided to jump in for a day of riding with the Richie Schley Freeride Camp, a two day clinic taught by Richie and Wade Simmons. Wade has long been one of my favorite riders to watch and to get a chance to chase him down Ninja Cougar and copy his style is something I couldn't pass up. The day was great and I highly recommend one of these clinics to any rider in the Park, you will come out of it with better skills and with those comes better style.

The trail crew have been hitting it hard this week, working on improving the flow of Schleyer and adding some legit features to the skills center at Olympic Station. The team has installed a set of micro rock drops for newer riders as well as a few wheel up targets to get those skills tuned up. They also added an armored path for riders to practice low speed cornering and bike control. Try to ride the cobbles without a wheel coming off, it gets progressively harder. My favorite new feature is the addition of the natural obstacles. The team put in a set of stumps with roots and rocks to simulate what lies on trail up in Garbanzo as well as on trails like Ho Chi Min or Devil's Club. Later this week the first zone in A-Line will be getting a facelift to improve the "four pack" section. Also new on trails this week is a new warning sign. The new signs appear at the top of all of our jump trails and are intended to let riders know that stopping on the main trail is dangerous as riders behind can't see you when taking air. Hopefully this reminder will have people pull completely off the trail when stopping to scope something out so we can avoid the chance of a nasty collision.

The Garbanzo zone is the topic of much speculation these days and we have a team of operators in snowcats pushing snow 7 days a week. By next week the heavy machinery should be done and we can get the mini excavators digging out the trails. At this point we are still going for it up there with the hope of getting things ready for the end of the month.

Cowan is putting the finishing touches on the Boneyard Slopestyle course and has done the maiden session of the Hot Tub, looping the over-vert with no problems. Once he is all wrapped up we will be opening up a line through the course for public consumption so look for that in the next week or so.

The weather looks pretty good going forward so come check out all the new additions. See you in the lineup, B-ri.

Whistler Mountain Bike Park Report

<heading>June 2, 2010</heading>

Remember a while back I told you that I wouldn't lie to you about what it's like in the Park? Well, the truth this week is that it's wet, muddy and a bit on the cold side. There are small pools of water here and there but the riding is still quite good. During the gaps in the weather systems the surface water soaks into the dirt and the riding becomes tacky and fantastic. The crowds are gone and the people riding are getting in max laps and having a good time. The moisture has enabled the line in Double Vision to get compacted and the GS is now running great.

Yesterday I even saw some dude backflip one of the jumps on a big bike! Cowan is almost finished with the Boneyard build and the hut tub, catcher's mitt and pyramid are all lined up and in place in the bottom third of the course. I can't wait until the line gets buffed in to see the first sessions take place on these new school features. I want to see someone downside tail whip on - hard way tail whip off that catchers mitt after looping the hot tub and tossing a sweet shoulder buzz off the apex of the pyramid - game on.

The trail crew have been working on two fronts, the main crew built a new entrance into Upper Angry Pirate so we can do the right thing and decommission the boggy section at the top of the ski run. The new single track is much more in line with our environmental practices and the flavor of the trail. We can now fix the ski run and get some grass growing to stabilize the soil. The other boys have actually been up at the top of Garbanzo working in snow cats to rid the upper Park of the white plague. Don't take this the wrong way, I wish for snow all the time. In the fall I wish it would snow every day and in the spring I wish it would just go away. This year we have a bit of a challenge with a big natural snow year on top of the monster snowmaking that ensured the Olympic race runs would hold up regardless of the weather. The result is going to be a few snow banks to ride around when we finally get the trails open up there.

More news to come later in the week - B-ri

Whistler Mountain Bike Park Report

<heading>May 26, 2010</heading>

Hey riders, here is a midweek update on what has been going on since the long weekend. We are now 100% open in the Fitz Zone (if you don't count the Boneyard that is). Cowan finished the GS / Double Vision track and we opened it on Monday. It is getting nicely ridden in and with a few tweaks will be a fantastic track to ride and even better to race!

For the rest of the Park riders, these two courses will be open to ride on Friday and Saturday with some closed course training happening on Saturday afternoon and racing happening on alternate courses on Sunday. What that means is that they won't be exclusively closed for racing for that much time out of the weekend so everyone can sneak in some laps.

On the lift front, we will be running both the Fitz Chair and the Whistler Village Gondola this weekend so lineups won't be too long. With our maximum lower mountain lift capacity cranking and all the trail offerings it will be a whole lot more like June riding while we are still putting May to bed.

Whistler Mountain Bike Park Report

<heading>May 21, 2010</heading>

Wow, that week went fast! After all the planning and preparation things really get moving once we get this machine moving forward. We have been hard at it getting more open this week and the course ready for the Crud 2 Mud race. The new trail additions this week include Dirt Merchant, Easy Does It, Angry Pirate (Upper and Lower), and a full buff job on Samurai Pizza Cat bringing the lower Park to 99.9 percent open. Golden Triangle is the last little slice of Fitz Zone that we are missing but it is not far off.

In the next few weeks we will be going to work on the skills centers adding a new one off Easy Does It and rejigging our other ones to offer better trailside training for riders of all abilities. At the same time we will be starting our initial forays into the Garbanzo Zone to see just how much snow is burying our trails and what it will take to get some open in the latter part of June.

For the long weekend we are expecting some decent albeit cool weather which means the trails will stay in good shape and the riding and racing should be good. If you
are not _________(insert adjective) enough to be racing in the Crud 2 Mud then at least come up and check out the action in the transition zone near the top of Fitz.

Have a great long weekend and see you in the lineup - B-ri.

Whistler Mountain Bike Park Report

Well the switch has been flipped. It is now summer season. I knew it would be a good start with the state of the trails and the amperage of the people I talked to the week before. We had a record opening day with almost 1000 riders and despite the fact that the line was long, the wait was not that bad. The weather for today seems to be holding so I am going to call this the best start up weekend of all time. Tribute needs to be paid to the Patrol and Trail Crew for all of their work last week which brought you the quantity and quality of trails. We will get the rest of them tuned up this week and will have Dirt Merchant and Easy Does It by next weekend. The Crud to Mud is also on tap so if your riding legs are up for it, sign up before the final few spots fill up. Thanks to all the riders who came out for the weekend, the vibe was great! Let's do it again next weekend.

We did a full cleanout of the foam pit to get rid of the old foam and top it up with new blue cubes. Each time we undertake this massive job we expect to find certain things at the bottom; cell phones, ipods, keys, bike parts, and tons of loose change. This time we found some of the above and possibly the two oddest items ever, a roll of toilet paper and a slice of processed-cheese-food!? What amazes me is that a piece of cheese can sit for over six months and not have a spec of mold on it! I guess the "Twinkie" now has a contender for the longest lasting food on earth (using the term "food" lightly). The Airdome is now open for business and as good as it gets, so come up for a session and feel the plush sensation of diving into a calm blue sea of foam. And if you lost your cheese last fall then you can pick it up in the lost-and-found.

See you in the lineup. B-ri.
