Whistler Venue Construction
With the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games arriving February and March 2010, venue construction preparations are complete in the resort and on the mountains. Whistler Blackcomb is the venue for the men's and women's Olympic and Paralympic alpine skiing disciplines of Downhill, Super-G, Giant Slalom, Slalom and Super Combined.
In preparation for these events, crews led by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), contoured and reshaped the men's and women's Downhill courses on Whistler Mountain. The men's Downhill, Giant Slalom and Super G will take place on the Dave Murray Downhill run, while the women's events, and all Paralympic alpine skiing events, will take place on a newly designed race course combining the runs Wildcard, Jimmy's Joker and mid to lower Franz's Trail.
Improvements to snowmaking technology have been ongoing since 2006 and include doubling the size of the reservoir, installing snowmaking pipe work, and pump station upgrades. VANOC spent approximately $17.6 million on snowmaking infrastructure for the Games, a legacy for Whistler Blackcomb and all of its guests long after 2010. Link to Snowmaking section of media kit.
Meanwhile, the competed Whistler Sliding Centre is located on the lower flank of Blackcomb Mountain. The Sliding Centre, which will have a venue capacity of 12,000, will host the Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton events.
