Environment

Whistler Blackcomb entrusts its Environment Team with the responsibility of spearheading sustainable initiatives with a focus on the areas of renewable energy, climate change, waste management, land use and water quality and conservation. The team also develops programs to educate both employees and the public about how they can make a difference.

Thanks to the ongoing commitment to mountain stewardship from staff Whistler Blackcomb, was recognized by Canada's Greenest Employers competition of 2009, which is organized by Mediacorp Canada Inc., the nation's largest publisher of employment-related periodicals and online directories, and published in Maclean’s Magazine. This special designation recognizes the employers leading the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations.

In Autumn 2009, Whistler Blackcomb is launching the Fitzsimmons Creek Renewable Energy Project, which will create enough energy to  match the ski area’s entire annual energy consumption. More information: link to Fitzsimmons tabs

“The Fitzsimmons Project represents a very meaningful step for us in doing what we can to address climate change inside our own operating footprint,” says Arthur DeJong, Mountain Planning and Environmental Resource Manager, Whistler Blackcomb. “I look forward to the day this winter when we begin to generate power out of the Fitzsimmons Project. It has been a long and challenging road, and we’ve made great gains, but this project is still only one of many steps that we need to make to become truly sustainable.”
